I was watching Up the other day, BTW love this movie, and the bathroom break scene came on. Oh My Gosh, I laugh till my sides hurt every time I see this scene.
However it does bring up some good trail etiquette questions. Do you know proper procedures when taking a potty break on the trail?
First of all, make sure you have the proper supplies.
1. Biodegradeable TP and/or baby wipes (you can bury the TP)
2. A packable trowl for digging your cathole (optional if you’re hiking on soft ground) There are a ton of different things out there, make sure you pack something very lightweight if you are on a multi day hike.
3. A few heavy duty or Freezer Gallon size Ziplock type bags. (One to keep your supplies in and the other to pack out your used wipes)
4. HAND SANITIZER
Now, How to do it.
Pick your spot – make sure you are at least 200 feet away from any trail, campsite and ESPECIALLY any body of water!! You may want to find a tree to lean over or at least grab onto.
Dig your hole first!! Don’t be Rusell and forget which one comes first. You really don’t want to put a messy shovel back in your pack! Your cathole should be at least 6″ deep and at least that wide.
Do your thing…. Nuf Said (pack away your cleansing materials/wipes)
Fill in your cathole.
Please, for the love of all things good and pure, STERILIZE YOUR HANDS!!
