But I don’t want to look like Arnold!
Or I’m too old!
We hear these excuses all the time, the truth is weight training has so many benefits that will keep you healthy and strong. You’re not going to look like Hans & Franz or Arnold unless you go on a strict diet and weight lifting routine! And you will age so much more healthy, without having to rely on medicines.
What you will get is the fountain of youth! I’m serious! You will start to age backwards! Who doesn’t want that! Not only is this great for Us “Boomers”, but us outdoorsy types as well. We did some weight training for a big mountain climb out west and had some fantastic results.
Let me give you some examples…
You can eat more food:
In order for muscles to repair and grow, they need fuel. Your metabolism increases because of this. If you want your muscles to grow and or maintain their strength you are going to need to feed them by increasing your calorie intake. Be careful though, this doesn’t mean an extra helping of mashed potatoes & gravy. You need to feed them lean proteins, complex carbs and colorful veggies. Try increasing your intake about 200-300 calories after a week or so of lifting and see how your body reacts.
You will build stronger bones:
Bone responds to weightlifting the same way that muscles do, by becoming stronger and denser. Building Strong bones can be the best defense against osteoporosis. You’re more active, more mobile and without lower back pain. Age Doesn’t matter; you can start when your 65 and still experience tremendous benefits from a weight lifting program. IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO START LIFTING.
You can get rid of pain:
Do you have limited range of motion in your joints? A Bad knee? A wrenched neck? Bum shoulder? Weighlifting promotes strength in your joints so you have ease of movement. That old knee problem improves enough for you to go hiking in the mountains for days without pain. No pain, more endurance. You can do more outdoorsy things and have fun while doing them!
You have a stronger back:
Juggling a 30 pound toddler and a few bags of groceries while opening your car can put your back in a compromising position. When you lift Weights, you strenghten your upper and lower body, which reduces strain on your back when you’re fored to lift heavy loads. Plus, don’t you think it would feel really good to walk around knowing that your back is as tight and toned as your legs?
You have everyday, functional strenght:
Weight training does wonders to help you with activities of daily living: Housework, yard work, moving furniture, and carrying bags of groceries without gasping for air and pooingout. If you have a medical condidtion such as arthritis or multiple sclerosis, lifting weights can be a godsend. You can rely on weightlifting to keep you strong where once all your strength was gone.
You have increased energy levels and your mood improves:
Strength training will elevate your level of endorphins (natural opiates produced by the brain), which will make you feel great. As if that isn’t enough to convince you, strength training has also been shown to be a great antidepressant, to help you sleep better, and to improve your overall quality of life.
Yes, Women can benefit just as much as Men:
Many women are wary of taking it up for fear that increased muscle means increased masculinity, this is not the case. Testosterone is a very important factor in the development of muscle shape, so as women have very low levels of this hormone their muscles develop differently, meaning a little resistance training will NOT lead to a bulky, butch physique.
You can reduce the risk of injury:
Strong muscles, tendons and ligaments are much more capable of withstanding stress, and the improved flexibility gained by strength training also reduces the likelihood of pulled muscles and back pain.
